chapter one geography vocabulary

absolute location the precise point where a place is located on Earth
distortion a change in the shape, size, or position of a place when it is shown on a map
map projection a way of representing the spherical Earth on a flat surface
relative location where a place is located in relation to another place
climate the pattern of weather over a long period
economic activity any action that relates to the making, buying, and selling of goods and services
landform any natural feature of Earth’s surface that has a distinct shape; includes major features, such as continents, plains, plateaus, and mountain ranges, and minor features, such as hills, valleys, canyons, and dunes
physical feature any natural characteristic of Earth’s surface, such as landforms and bodies of water
population density the average number of people who live in a unit of area, such as a square mile; a measure of how crowded an area is
region an area defined by one or more natural or cultural characteristics that set it apart from other areas
thematic map a map that shows a particular topic, such as climate or population density
vegetation all the plants and trees in an area
case study research conducted about a specific issue or geographic area that helps to explain a problem and its possible outcomes
cultural geography the subfield of geography that studies the relationship between the elements of culture (such as language, dress, religion, customs, and music) and the places in which they are found
economic geography the subfield of geography that studies economic activity and the factors affecting them
environmental geography the subfield of geography that studies the physical geography of a region and how natural systems change, influence, or are influenced by physical geography and human activity
historical geography the subfield of geography that studies places at a certain time in the past or how such places and their relationships have changed over time
political geography the subfield of geography that studies political divisions, organization, and processes, as well as the factors affecting them
