| island | area of land that is completely surrounded by water |
| canyon | a large crack in the earth caused by a river or earthquake |
| mountain | large, tall rock that extends into the air; taller than a hill |
| hill | mound of earth with a rounded top; smaller than a mountain |
| isthmus | thin strip of land that connects two larger land areas |
| penninsula | thin strip of land that extends into a body of water |
| valley | low land between hills or mountains |
| volcano | opening in the earth's crust from which lava or ash escape |
| plain | large area of flat land |
| plateau | large area of flatland that is higher than the land around it |
| lake | a large area of water that is surrounded by land |
| bay | an area of water that is mostly surrounded by land |
| ocean | a major body of water that covers large parts of the earth |
| waterfall | a place where water flows over a cliff |
| river | a thin waterway that allows water to flow into a lake or ocean |
| pond | a very small body of water that is surrounded by land |
| strait | a channel of water that connects two large areas of water |
| wetland | an area of wet, soggy land with many pools of water |
