UNIT 1: Map & Globe Skills Vocabulary
| Vocabulary Word | Definition |

| globe | a small representation of Earth in the shape of a sphere |
| compass rose | a symbol on a map that shows directions |
| latitude | imaginary lines on a map or globe that run west to east and show distance from the Equator (also called parallels) |
| longitude | imaginary lines on a map or globe that run north to south and show distance from the Prime Meridian (also called meridians) |
| legend or map key | shows what each symbol on a map means |
| Equator | the imaginary line that runs west to east, and cuts the Earth into the northern and southern hemispheres |
| Prime Meridian | the imaginary line that runs north to south, and cuts the Earth into the western and eastern hemispheres |
| map grid | a system used to locate places on a map by dividing the map into squares (simplified version of latitude & longitude) |
| cardinal directions | north, south, east, west |
| intermediate directions | NE, NW, SE, SW |
| map scale | shows distance on a map (often uses inches or centimeters to represent miles or kilometers) |
| Tropic of Cancer | located approximately 23 degrees north of the Equator |
| Tropic of Capricorn | located approximately 23 degrees south of the Equator |
| inset map | smaller map within a larger map |
| hemisphere | half of a sphere |
