| basin | a large area of land drained by a river |
| bay | a part of sea or lake that cuts into the coastline |
| delta | a triangle of sand and soil deposited at the mouth of some large rivers |
| desert | a very, dry sandy area with few or no plants growing on it |
| gulf | a large area of ocean partly surrounded by land |
| highlands | land that is higher than the area around it |
| island | smaller land area surrounded by water |
| isthmus | a narrow strip of land that joins two larger pieces of land |
| lake | a large body of water that is surrounded on all sides by land |
| mountains | a land mass with great height and steep sides, higher than a hill |
| peninsula | a piece of land surrounded on nearly all sides by water |
| plains | a large, flat area of land without trees |
| plateau | a high, level area of land |
| river | a large natural stream of water flowing in a particular course to another body of water |
| sea | a small body of fresh or salt water |
| strait | a narrow body of water between two larger bodies of water |
| tributary | a river or stream that flows into a larger river or stream |
| volcanoe | an opening in the earth's crust through which melted rock, ash and gases are forced out |
