archipelago a group of islands
basin a large area of land drained by a river
bay a part of sea or lake that cuts into the coastline
delta a triangle of sand and soil deposited at the mouth of some large rivers
desert a very, dry sandy area with few or no plants growing on it
gulf a large area of ocean partly surrounded by land
highlands land that is higher than the area around it
island smaller land area surrounded by water
isthmus a narrow strip of land that joins two larger pieces of land
lake a large body of water that is surrounded on all sides by land
mountains a land mass with great height and steep sides, higher than a hill
peninsula a piece of land surrounded on nearly all sides by water
plains a large, flat area of land without trees
plateau a high, level area of land
river a large natural stream of water flowing in a particular course to another body of water
sea a small body of fresh or salt water
strait a narrow body of water between two larger bodies of water
tributary a river or stream that flows into a larger river or stream
volcanoe an opening in the earth's crust through which melted rock, ash and gases are forced out
