Key Terms for maps and globes and five themes of geography
| Term | Definition |

| name the world's continents | North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Antarctica, and Australia |
| name the world's oceans | Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Arctic Ocean, Southern Ocean |
| hemispheres | Dividing the earth into halves |
| equator | The imaginary line that circles the earth half way between the North Pole and South Pole |
| Prime Meridian | The line of longitude marked 0 degrees from which geographers measure distance east and west |
| cardinal directions | North, East, South, West |
| latitude | Line of Latitude run EAST and WEST, but measure NORTH and SOUTH |
| longitude | Lines of Longitude run NORTH and SOUTH but measure EAST and WEST |
| compass rose | A symbol on a map showing the four directions (north, south, east, west) |
| map key / legend | Drawn on a map to show symbols for roads, cities, places of interest and elevation; includes maps' symbols with their explanations |
| scale | Relative size as shown on a map - An example = 1 inch = 100 miles |
| capital | a city serving as a seat of government |
| political map | A map showing mostly political divisions, such as national or state boundaries, important cities, and capitals |
| physical map | A map that shows mostly the natural features of the earth, such as lakes, rivers, mountains, and deserts |
| distribution map | a map that shows how things like population, rainfall, language, and religion are distributed |
| politics | activities associated with the government of a country or nation |
| climate | A description of a pattern of weather that an area has over a long period of time |
| intermediate directions | Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest |
| city | A place in which people live that is larger or more important than a town |
| continent | A large land mass |
| Location | Where a place is, its position on earth (ex. Longitude & Latitude) |
| Description of Place | Explains the characteristics of a place |
| Movement | The way people, ideas, and goods get from place to place |
| Human-Environment Interaction | The way that people affect and are affected by the place where they live |
| Region | An area with common physical or cultural features that make it different from other areas |
