Question | Answer |
MOTION | When one objects distance from another is changing |
SPEED | The distance an object travels per unit of time. D/T
Ex. 50 m/p/hr |
REFERENCE POINT | A place or object used for comparison to determine if something is in motion |
FORCE | A push or pull on an object
- strength and direction |
SPRING SCALE | This is used to measure force |
NEWTON (n) | A unit used to measure force (n) |
FRICTION | A force that resists the motion of one object sliding over another |
VELOCITY | Speed in a given direction
Ex. 30ft per/sec West |
SLIDING FRICTION | Two solid surfaces sliding over each other
Ex. pushing a box on a floor |
STATIC FRICTION | Friction that acts on objects that are not moving
Ex. a book on a ramp |
ROLLING FRICTION | When an object rolls over a surface
Ex. cart, bike |
GRAVITY | A force that pulls objects towards each other |
WEIGHT | Strength of the gravitational force |
ACCELERATION | The rate at which velocity changes |
BALANCED FORCES | Equal forces acting on one object in opposite directions.
Ex. Pushing on a box equally: 5N → ❒ ← 5N, this will give you a Net force of 0. |
UNBALANCED FORCES | Unbalanced forces cause an object to start moving, stop moving, or change direction.
Ex. Pushing on a box with more force on one side: 10N ⎯→ ❒ ← 5N, this will give you a Net force of 5. |
WHAT is NEWTON'S 1st LAW of MOTION? | An object at rest will remain at rest and an object moving at a constant velocity will remain at a constant velocity UNLESS it is acted upon by unbalanced forces.
Ex. A ball moving that hits a wall, a pencil moves when you pick it up. |
INERTIA | Tendency to resit a change in motion.
Ex. Running and stopping, tennis ball in a circle, stopping a car. |
SATELLITE | Any object that orbits (goes around) another object in space.
Ex. planets & the moon are natural satellites |
What is the MEAN of a set, or group of numbers? | The average number - found by adding all the numbers in a group/set & dividing by the sum by the numbers you started with.
Ex. Add the set 2, 4, 6, 8 it =20 - now divide 20 by the number of numbers you added, which is 4. Your Mean or Average is 5. |
What is the MEDIAN of a set, or group of numbers? | The middle number when a group/set of numbers is listed in order from least to greatest.
Ex. In the group/set of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, The middle or MEDIAN number is 6. |
What is the MODE of a set, or group of numbers? | The number that occurs most often in a set/group of numbers.
Ex. In the group/set of 2, 4, 5, 5, 7, 8,8, 8 - The MODE, or the number that occurs the most is 8. |
What is the RANGE of a set, group of numbers? | The difference between the greatest value and the least value in a set of data.
EX. In the set 2, 4, 6, 8 you would subtract 2 from 8 to get the RANGE which is 6. |
