Term | Definition |
Atom | The smallest particle of an element. The building blocks of matter. |
ATP | Energy that is produced in cells. ATP is short for aderosine triphosphere. |
Cellular Respiration | The process of metabolism in which cells obtain energy in the form of ATP by causing glucose and other food molecules to react with oxygen. |
Chemical Equation | A chemical equation is a written representation of the process that occurs in a chemical reaction. |
Chemical Formula | It tells us the number of atoms of each element in a compound. It contains the symbols of the atoms of the elements present in the compound as well as how many there are each element in the form of subscriptions. |
Chemical Reaction | Reactions in which chemical bonds are formed or broken and one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties. |
Chemistry | The scientific study of matter the structure properties and reactions of the atoms and the compounds they form. |
Chloroplast | One of the organelles in a plant cell that contains chloraphill and is the place where photosynthesis. |
Coefficient | The numbers placed before the reactants in a chemical equation so that the number of atoms in the products are equal to the number of atoms in the reactants on the left side. |
Compound | atoms of more than one element that chemically join together. Water is a compound. |
Electron | Subatomic particles that are negatively charged and orbit the nucleus of the atom. |
Element | A substance that contains only one kind of atom. |
Law of Conservation of Mass | The Law of Conservation of Mass states that the total number of atoms is the same before and after a chemical reaction occurs. |
Mitochondria | An organelle in animals cells where APT is produced. |
Mixture | A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically joined and can be physically separated. |
Neutron | Subatomic particles that have no charge and are located in the nucleus. |
Periodic Table | A table that organizes the elements by their atomic number and chemical properties. |
Photosynthesis | The process by which a green plant turns water and carbon dioxide into food when the plant is exposed. |
Product | A product is a substance that is formed as the result of a chemical reaction. |
Proton | Subatomic particles that are positively charged and are located in the nucleus. |
Reactant | Starting materials in a chemical reaction that will interact together. |
Solution | A homogenous mixture of two or more substances which may be solids, liquids, gases, or a combination of these. |
Subatomic Particles | Parts of an atom. |
Subscript | Subscripts in a chemical equasion is the number of the lower right hand site of a chemical element. |
