Chemical Hazard | any hazard that comes from a solid, liquid or gas element, compound or mixture that could cause health problems or pollution |
Cybersecurity | security measures intended to protect information and information technology from unauthorized access or use |
DOT | U.S. Department of Transportation; a U.S. Government agency with a mission of developing and coordinating policies to provide an efficient and economical national transportation system, taking into account need, the environment, and national defense |
Engineering Controls | controls that use technological and engineering improvements to isolate, diminish or remove a hazard from the workplace |
EPA | Environmental Protection Agency; a Federal agency charged with the authority to make and enforce national environmental policy |
Ergonomic hazard | hazards that can create physical and psychological stresses because of forceful or repetitive work, improper work techniques, or poorly designed tools and workspaces. |
Facility | also called a plant. A building or place that is used for a particular industry |
Hazardous agent | a substance, methor or action by which damage or destruction can happen to personnel, equipment or the environment |

NRC | Nuclear Regulatory Commission; a U.S. Government agency that protects public health and safety through regulation of nuclear power and the civilian use of nuclear materials |
OSHA | Occupational Safety and Health Administration; a USG agency created to establish and enforce workplace safety and health standards, conduct workplace inspections and propose penalties for noncompliance, and investigate serious workplace incidents |
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) | specialized gear that provides a barrier between hazards and the worker using the PPE |
physical hazard | any hazard that comes from environmental factors such as excessive levels of noise, temperature, pressure, vibration, radiation, electricity, and rotating equipment |
physical security | security measures intended to counter physical threats from a person or group seeking to intentionally harm other people or vital assets |
process industries | a broad term for industries that convert raw materials, using a series of actions or operations into products for consumers |
process technician | a worker in a process facility who monitors and controls mechanical, physical and/or chemical changes, throuhought many processes, to produce either a final product or an intermediate product, made from raw materials |
process technology | a controlled and monitored series of operations, steps, or tasks that converts raw materials into a product |
security hazard | a hazard or threat from a person or group seeking to intentionally harm people, computer resources or other vital assets |
SHE | Safety, Health and the Environment. Also referred to as HSE or EHS |
Soil Pollution | the accidental or intentional discharge of any harmful substances into the soil |
Unit | an integrated group of process equipment used to produce a specific product or process. All equipment contained in a department |
Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) | an OSHA program designed to recognize and promote effective safety and health management |
Water pollution | the introduction into a body of water or the water table of any EPA listed potential pollutant that affects the water's chemical, physical or biological integrity |
