Term | Definition |
CARDIAC GLYCOSIDES | CHF, Arrhythmias, and increase the contraction of
the heart.
Side effects: N/V, Confusion, Arrhythmias, Yellow/Green halos, Low therapeutic index. |
ANTIARRHYTHMIC DRUGS | Help restore and maintain normal heart rhythms
Side effects: N/V, Confusion, Arrhythmias. |
ANTIANGINALS | CP/Angina, Decrease the amount of blood that returns to
the heart, decreasing the heart rate or decreasing resistance to the pump, and decreases the work load on the heart; Vasodilator.
Side effects: Headache, Dizziness, Hypotension. |
VASODILATORS | Peripheral vascular disease caused by arteriosclerosis and advanced diabetes and dilate peripheral blood vessels, Increase blood flow to extremities by relaxing the smooth muscles of the blood vessels.
Side effects: Tachycardia. |
ENDOTHELIN RECEPTOR ANTAGONISTS | Treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and reverse the effects of endothelin, a substance in the walls of the blood vessels that cause them to narrow.
Side effects: Pale skin, dyspnea with exertion, unusual bleeding or bruising, unusual tiredness. |
PHOSPHODIESTERASE TYPE 5 INHIBITOR (PDE-5) | To treat erectile dysfunction, and PAH and works to increase blood flow to the penis through vasodilation; also treats PAH through vasodilation.
Side effects: Appear to be dose related; Headache; Dizziness; Flushing; Dyspepsia; Nasal congestion; Rhinitis |
CALCIUM CHANNEL BLOCKERS | HTN; Angina, dilate coronary arteries, reduce oxygen demand on the heart and decrease heart rate; block calcium in the cardiac muscle and blood vessels.
Side effects: Constipation. |
ANGIOTENISIN-CONVERTING ENZYME (ACE) INHIBITORS | HTN; CHF and prevents the conversion of angiotensin I and angiotensin II.
Side effects: Cough. |
ANGIOTENSIN II INHIBITORS | HTN, CHF, Inhibits the action at the beta receptors on the
heart; some are selective to only the heart while others are
non-selective and can act in other places such as the lungs.
Side effects: hypotension; bronchoconstriction, dizziness. |
ALPHA-ADRENERGIC BLOCKERS | HTN, Severe CHF, BPH and inhibits the action at the alpha receptors in the blood vessels.
Side effects: Orthostatic hypotension, Dizziness. |
ALPHA/BETA-ADRENERGIC BLOCKING AGENTS | Management of hypertension and combines alpha-1-adrenergic blocking and beta-adrenergic blocking activity in a single substance.
Side effects: Dizziness and tiredness may occur. |
ANTILIPIDEMIC AGENTS | Heart disease and high cholesterol and reduces serum lipids and minimizes rate of new fat deposition; Decreases LDL, Decreases triglycerides.
Side effects: Diarrhea, Constipation, Flushing. |
