Term | Definition |
Brain Stem | Controls heart rate, breathing, and other critical body functions |
Cerebellum | Helps control fine movements and balance |
Occipital Lobe | This controls your vision |
Temporal Lobes | This controls your hearing and is responsible for speech |
Parietal Lobe | This is where your touch and taste sense are controlled along with some memory |
Frontal Lobe | Controls your feelings, emotions, complex thinking, and imagination |
Corpus Collosum | A band of fibers that connects the two hemispheres of the brain |
Neuron | The cells of the brain that transmit information to and from each other |
Dendrite | An "arm" that extends from the nucleus of a neuron connecting it to other neurons |
Synapse | The gap in between axons where neurotransmitters pass from one neuron to the next |
Pituitary Gland | Controls growth by releasing hormones in the body |
Hypothalamus | Helps to coordinate many functions in the brain, problems with it lead to depression and other disorders like ADHD. |
Cerebrum | The most "evolved" part of the brain. It contains the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes. |
Depression | People with this are sad, sleep a lot, and are difficult to cheer up |
ADHD | People with this have a hard time concentrating and are often talkative and hyper. |

Limbic System | Connects the different lobes of the brain and controls emotion. |
Myelination | Super speeds nerve signals |
Pruning | Gets rid of un-needed connections |
Adolescence | Period when the brain starts to reorganize and the frontal lobe develops more |
Adulthood | Brain still forms new connections, but at a slower rate. There can be some atrophy |
Childhood | Brain increases 80% in size and there is an over-production of synapses. |
