| arthritis | common joint problem- symptoms are pain, stiffness and swelling of the joints |
| spongy bone | lightweight bones located toward the ends of long bones
ex. thigh and upper arm |
| compact bone | hard, strong layer which contains deposits of calcium phosphate that gives the bone strength |
| osteoporosis | weakness of the bones |
| fracture | broken or cracked bone |
| marrow | red blood cells are formed in the marrow in the center of your bones |
| appendicular skeleton | includes the bones of the appendages (arms and legs) and supports them |
| axial skeleton | includes the skull and the bones that support it such as the vertebrae, ribs and sternum |

| hinge joint | back and forth movement like hinges on a door
ex. elbows, knees and fingers |
| ball and socket joint | the rounded end of one bone fits into a cup-like cavity on another bone

ex. wrists, ankles, between vertebrae |
