What is happening to the human population? It is increasing
An increase in the human population has led to concerns for Food security and food production
Food has to be sufficient in Quality and Quantity
Food must protect the environment so must be Sustainable and not degrade natural resources.
Which type of food production produces more energy per unit area? Crop production
Where is it beneficial to produce livestock? Habitats unsuitable for growing crops (steep hills)
What are the four examples of plant crops? Cereals, potatoes, legumes and roots
What are the two main factors that affect agricultural production Plant growth and factors affecting photosynthesis
How can we maximise plant growth? Fertilisers, protecting crops from pests, breeding higher yield cultivars.
What are the three factors that affect photosynthesis? Temperature, Light intensity and CO2 conc (TLC)
Which type of farming requires less land? Intensive
Which type of farming is more labour intensive? Free range farming
Which type of farming has a higher price of product? Free range farming
Which type of farming is more cost effective? Intensive farming
Which type of farming has a higher net profit? Intensive farming
Which type of farming is more ethical? Free range farming
Which type of farming has low animal welfare Intensive farming
