Scientific Inquiry the diverse ways in which scientists study the natural world and propose explanations based on the evidence they gather
Hypothesis a possible explanation for a set of observations or answer to a scientific question.
Variables factors that can change in an experiment
Controlled experiment An experiment in which only one variable is manipulated at a time
Independent or Manipulated Variable one variable that is purposely changed to test a hypothesis
Dependent or Responding Variable The factor that may change or will be measured in response to the manipulated variables
Data the facts, figures, and other evidence gathered through observations
Communicating sharing of ideas and experimental findings with others through writing and speaking
scientific theory a well-tested explanation for a wide range of observations or experimental results
scientific law a statement that describes what scientists expect to happen every time under a particular set of conditions
scientific literacy understanding basic scientific terms and principles well enough that you can evaluate information, make personal decisions, and take part in public affairs.

SI Modern scientists use a version of the metric system called the International System of Units
meter The basic unit of length in the SI system
Kilogram The basic unit of mass in the SI system
Liter The basic unit of volume in the SI system
Second The basic unit of time in the SI system
Weight measure of the force of gravity acting on an object
Placebo a substance that has no therapeutic effect, used as a control in testing new drugs
