Poetry devices for self contained

QuestionAnswer
stanza unit of lines put together
couplet stanza consisting of 2 lines that rhyme
mood a feeling an author creates for the reader
imagery representation of the 5 senses; mental image created
Metaphor implied comparison of 2 objects or ideas
personification giving human traits or characteristics to animals or inanimate objects
simile direct comparison using “like” or “as”
symbol A word or object that has its own meaning and represents another word, object or idea
alliteration The repetition of an initial (beginning) sound or consonant in two or more words next to each other in a line of a poem
assonance The repetition of a vowel sound in two or more words in the line of a poem
Onomatopoeia A word that imitates a noise or action
refrain The repetition of one or more phrases or lines at certain intervals, usually at the end of each stanza
repetition A word or phrase repeated within a line or stanza
rhyme scheme The pattern in which end rhyme occurs
