Grammatical categories sets of lexemes that share common syntactic properties
Lexical ambiguity ambiguity that applies to words having more than one meaning ex - bank can mean a building or a part of a river
Syntactic ambiguity multiple meanings that have grammatical properties, such as noun, verb, adjective ex - bank can be used as a noun (I went to the bank) or a verb (I bank here)
Functional ambiguity ex - bank can be used as a noun (I went to the bank) or a verb (I bank here)
Categorical ambiguity ex - bank can mean a building or a part of a river
Semantic definition A definition of a grammatical unit that refers to the kind of meaning it has ex - secondary school definitions of "noun" and "verb"
Contextual definition a definition of a grammatical unit that makes reference to the linguistic context in which the unit occurs ex - what is the function of a noun?
Syntactic context a word or grammatical category with which a words belonging to a certain syntactic category may occur to form a phrase ex - the ______ (common nouns)
Morphology the structures of words, can be used to define the syntactic categories of words
Morpheme a minimal meaningful unit of language
Free Morpheme can stand alone
Bound Morpheme has to be placed with a free morpheme to make sense ex - un-, -s
Affix a bound morpheme, either a prefix or a suffix
Derivational morpheme an affix that changes the category of the free morpheme to which it attaches, the meaning of the word, or both
Inflectional morpheme an affix that changes the form but not the category of the free morpheme to which it attaches ex - past tense list on pg 27
Morphological context an affix that a free morpheme of a certain category may occur with to form a word ex - ____-ing is a verb
syntactic context a word or grammatical category with which a word belonging to a certain syntactic category may occur to form a phrase OR looking at the other words around it ex - the _____ (for common nouns)
form classes have syntactic meaning
structure class have functional meaning
inflect change the form of the word in order to express something grammatical
lexeme the set of all possible inflections of a word
prototypical something that usually happen, regular verb ex - walk, walking, walked
