Ch. 1 Nature-2012

Nature of Science, Scientific Method, Metrics

QuestionAnswer
bar graph used to compare numbers/ amounts
circle/pie graph used to compare percentages
constant factor that does not change in an experiment
control part of the experiment used to compare the results of the experiment against
controlled experiment an experiment that tests only one factor at a time by using a comparison of a control group with an experimental group
degree Celcius unit of measure on the Celcius temperature scale
density the mass per unit volume of a material
dependent variable variable that depends on what happened in the experiment
experiment an investigation that test a hypothesis by collecting information under controlled conditions.
gram measures mass with a triple beam balance, a unit of mass in the metric system
graphs used to organized data, sometimes helps make errors more noticeable
hypothesis is an explanation for a question or a problem that can be tested. It is based on prior scientific research. (educated guess)
increment amount that one space on an axis represents
independent variable variable that is controlled and changed by the researcher
length distance from one point to another
line graph a graph used to find relationships between variables
liter measures volume with a graduated cylinder, basic unit of volume in the metric system
manipulated variable the factor that causes the change in the other variable (also called independent variable).
mass the amount of matter in an object
measurement information from the five senses compared to a scale
meter the basic SI unit of length and is measured with a metric ruler or meter stick.
model anything that represents an idea, event, or object to improve understanding
newton measures weight with a spring scale, the SI unit for force (symbol, N)
observation information from the 5 senses
origin the point where the x and y axes cross, the beginning of the graph
responding variable changes in response to the manipulated variable (also called dependent variable)
scientific law describes an observed pattern in nature, recurring facts or events in nature provided by a theory
scientific method a set of steps used in an investigation
scientific theory a well tested explanation for a set of observations
SI the international system of units
slope the amount of "tilt" on the line of a graph
spring scale Used to measure the force of gravity (weight) exerted on an object and measures that force in newtons (N)
temperature the average kinetic energy of the molecules
thermometer a tool used to measure temperature
triple beam balance An instrument that uses a set of three sliding riders to balance an unknown weight on the pan and measures mass in grams.
variable A factor that can change in an experiment
volume the amount of space an object takes up
weight the measure of the pull of gravity on an object
x axis horizontal axis of the raph, manipulated and independant variable (cause)
y axis vertical axis of a graph, responding and dependant variable (effect)
data pieces of information acquired through the experiment

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
