Mr. Biando's Lab - Three States of Matter
| term | definition |
|---|---|
| States of matter | The physical forms of matter, which include solid, liquid, and gas. |
| solid | The state of matter in which the volume and shape of a substance are fixed and in which molecular movement is slow. |
| Atoms and molecules | Tiny particles that make up matter. |
| Crystalline solid | A solid that has a very orderly, three-dimensional arrangement of particles. |
| Amorphous solid | A solid that does not have any special arrangement of it's particles. |
| liquid | The state of matter that has a definite volume but not a definite shape, and it's molecular movement is faster than in a solid and allows the particles to slide or flow past one another. |
| surface tension | The force that acts on the surface of a liquid and tends to minimize the area of the surface. |
| Viscosity | The resistance of a gas or liquid to flow. |
| gas | A form of matter that does not have a definite shape or volume, and in which it's molecular movement is fast enough to break away from one another. |
| Surface tension | The reason why a drop of water forms a spherical shape. |
