| Byte | a group of bits strung together to form a character. |
| central processing unit | the "brain" of the computer that directs all the operations necessary for a computer to turn data into information. |

| compact disk/read only memory (CD-ROM) | Disks that are used to store data. |
| Data | Facts or figures that are assembled and processed to produce needed information. |
| default | A particular setting for a variable that is assigned automatically by the software and remains in effect unless changed by the user. |
| disk drive | the drive in the central processing unit where a disk is inserted. |
| Edit | to change the contents of a document. |
| File | a document that is stored electronically. |
| Flash memory | faster than disk storage with up to 16 GB or more or data transferring over a USB . |
| floppy disk | a storage device made of flexible plastic material which is material on which data can be recorded. |
| format | the arrangement of data for storage and display and the method for achieving such an arrangement. |
| hard drive | a storage device typically located inside the Central Processing Unit that is enclosed in an airtight case. This is main storage device of a computer and are the fastest and have the greatest storage ability. |

| key board | the most common method of entering data into a computer. |
| modem | a communications device that allows a computer to connect to the internet. |

| output device | a device such as a printer, video display or speaker that presents data from a computer to a user. |
| printer | output device that display text or images on paper, |
| random access memory ( RAM) | saves all the data while the computer is turned on and automatically erases it when the computer is turned off. |
| router | a random device that connects two or more networks together. |
| save | storing a document or data electronically. |
| scanner | a device that reads an image or document especially for use of storage on the computer. |
| storage device | a hardware device of capable of holding data or information. |
