Jane Schaffer Terms
| Question | Answer |

| Essay | Multi Paragraph; gives your analysis on a subject; has an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion |
| Thesis | Main idea of the essay; answers the prompt question; comes at the end of the introduction |
| Introduction | First paragraph in an essay, introduces the thesis |
| Body Paragraph | The middle paragraphs of an essay that give support to prove your thesis |
| Topic Sentence (TS) | First sentence of a body paragraph, gives the main idea of the paragraph. |
| Concrete Detail (CD) | quotations, paraphrases, or summary of the text; evidence from the text |
| Commentary (CM) | your explanation of the evidence; your insights or analysis; comes from your mind |
| Concluding Sentence (CS) | The last sentence in a body paragraph. Restates the topic sentence |
| Chunk | One CD + Two CMs. |
| Conclusion | Last paragraph in an essay. Gives final insights into essay topic. |
| Prewriting / Brainstorming | The process of getting your thoughts / ideas down on paper. Planning your essay before you write. |
