Jane Schaffer Terms

QuestionAnswer
Essay Multi Paragraph; gives your analysis on a subject; has an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion
Thesis Main idea of the essay; answers the prompt question; comes at the end of the introduction
Introduction First paragraph in an essay, introduces the thesis
Body Paragraph The middle paragraphs of an essay that give support to prove your thesis
Topic Sentence (TS) First sentence of a body paragraph, gives the main idea of the paragraph.
Concrete Detail (CD) quotations, paraphrases, or summary of the text; evidence from the text
Commentary (CM) your explanation of the evidence; your insights or analysis; comes from your mind
Concluding Sentence (CS) The last sentence in a body paragraph. Restates the topic sentence
Chunk One CD + Two CMs.
Conclusion Last paragraph in an essay. Gives final insights into essay topic.
Prewriting / Brainstorming The process of getting your thoughts / ideas down on paper. Planning your essay before you write.
