Vocabulary Definitions

QuestionAnswer
Science The knowledge obtained by observing natural events and conditions in order to discover facts and formulate laws or principles that can be verified or tested.
Physical Science The scientific study of nonliving matter.
Energy The ability to do work.
Chemistry The study of all forms of matter, including how matter interacts with other matter.
Meteorology The study of the Earth's atmosphere, especially in relation to weather,and climate.
Meteorologist Person who studies the atmosphere.
Geology The study of the origin, history, and structure of Earth.
Geochemist Person who specializes in the chemistry of rocks, minerals, and soil.
Biology The study of life.
Scientific Method A series of logical and orderly steps used to answer questions and solve problems.
Observation The process of obtaining information by using the senses.
Hypothesis A possible explanation or answer to a question or problem. An educated guess.
Data Any pieces of information acquired through observation or experimentation.
Control Group A standard with which to compare the results.
Constants A variable in an experiment that stays the same.
Independent Variable The variable that is changed in the experiment.
Dependent Variable The factor (variable) being observed or measured.
Conclusion A statement based on the results of the experiment.
Graph A diagram that shows the relationship of one variable to another.
Law A well-tested description of how something in nature works.
Theory An explanation backed by results obtained from repeated tests or experiments.
Model A representation of an object or system.
Mass The amount of matter in an object.
Kilo means 1000 times.
Milli means 1/1000.
1 Kilogram equals 1000 Grams
Metric Ton equals 1000 kg
SI unit for mass kilogram (kg)
SI unit for length meter (m)
Volume The amount of space that something occupies.
SI for liquid volume liters (L)
1 cubic liter equals 1000 L
1 milliliter equals 1 cubic centimeter or .001 liters
Volume of solid object cubic meters, cubic milimeters, cubic centimeters
Density Amount of matter in a given volume. D=m/v
Derived Quantity Answer is found by combining 2 basic quantities. Ex: Density
Temperature The measurement of how hot (cold) a substance is.
SI Unit for Temperature Kelvin (K)
