What is Physical Science?
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| science | a way of learning all about the natural world by gathering information |
| observing | using one or more senses to gather information |
| qualitative observations | descriptions that do not involve numbers or measurements |
| quantative observations | measurements that involve numbers |
| inferring | when you explain your observations based on reasoning from what your already know |
| predicting | making a forecast of what will happen in the future based on past experience or evidence |
| chemistry | the study of the properties of matter and how matter changes |
| physics | the study of matter and energy and how they interact |
| scientific inquiry | refers to the different ways scientists study the natural world |
| hypothesis | a possible answer to a scientific question or explanation for a set of observations |
| variable | factors that can change in an experiment |
| manipulated variable | the variable that is changed in an experiment |
| responding variable | the variable that is expected to change because of the manipulated variable |
| controlled experiment | an investigation in which all variables except one remain the same |
| communicating | sharing ideas and conclusions with others through writing and speaking |
| data | the facts, figures, and other evidence gathered through observations |
| scientific law | a statement that describes what scientists expect to happen every time under a particular set of conditions |
| scientific theory | a well-tested explanation for a wide range of observations or experimental results |
| technology | a way of changing the natural world to meet human needs or solve problems |
| engineer | someone who is trained to use both technological and scientific knowledge to solve practical problems |
| brainstorming | a process in which group members freely suggest any creative solutions that come to mind |
| constraint | any factor that limits or restricts a design |
| trade-off | an exchange in which one benefit is given up in order to obtain another |
| prototype | a working model used to test a design |
| troubleshooting | the process of analyzing a design problem and finding a new way to fix it |
| system | having one thing in common; made of parts that work together |
