DEA# assigned to physicians which must be indicated on a Rx when prescribing controlled substances
LEVEL I high abuse potential, not approved for medical use in the United States, e.g. heroin, LSD, mescaline
LEVEL II High abuse potential , may lead to severe dependence, written prescription only. e.g. morphine, codeine, methadone
LEVEL V low abuse potential, prescription may be written by a practitioner, includes cough suppressants containing codeine
Adverse Reactions unintended side effect (iatrogenic)
Teratogenic causes side effect in a fetus
idiosyncracy a unique or unusual response to a drug
tolerance decrease response to the drug, dosage must be increased.
dependence an acquired need for a drug, produces with drawl symptom
actions cellular changes that occur as a result of a drug. e.g. Benadryl, competes w/histamine
cautions steps taken to prevent errors
contraindications list of conditions for which a drug shouldn't be taken. e.g. benadryl is contraindicated for breast feeding & hypersensitivity
Generic Name common or general name, assigned by USAN, NEVER Capitalized
Trade Name name used to brand a drug by the companies, capitalized
analgesics relieve pain without loss of consciousness. e.g. Ibuprofen, aspirin, Tylenol
Antacid Neutralizes stomach acid, e.g. Mylanta, Milk of Magnesia
Anticoagulant prevents or delays blood clotting. e.g. Heparin, Coumadin
Antianxiety Reduces anxiety. e.g. Valium, Xanax
Antitussive Prevents or relieves cough. e.g. codeine
Diuretic Increases urinary output. e.g. Lasix
Hypoglycemic Reduces blood glucose (sugar)levels e.g. Insulin
Bacteriostatic stops bacteria from spreading
Bacterial agent small, free living organisms, maybe grown in a liquid or solid culture
Indications List of conditions or diseases for which a drug is meant to be used
Interactions Drugs & food that alter the effect of a drug
