| empathy | putting yourself in someone else's shoes |
| irony | saying one thing and meaning the opposite; then the opposite happens from what you expect |
| antagonist | the "bad guy" or character opposing the main character |
| context | information around a word that can help you determine its meaning |
| exposition | usually the beginning of the story, provides background info |
| simile | comparing two things using the words 'like' or 'as' |
| protagonist | the main character or "good guy" |
| theme | the overall message of a story |
| conflict | the main problem |
| metaphor | comparing two things NOT using the words 'like' or 'as' |
| narrator | the person telling the story |
| tone | author's attitude toward the subject, characters, audience, etc. |
| characterization | development of character personalities |
| inference | a conclusion based on clues or facts |
| flashback | going back to an earlier time |
| plot | the sequence of events in a story |
| resolution | how the problem is solved; usually the end of a story |
| hyperbole | an intended over exaggeration |
| foreshadowing | hints or clues about something that will happen in the future |
| symbol | a person, place, or object that represents something bigger than itself |
