Eng12 NF terms A

This is the first set of terms with regard to non-fiction reading comprehension.

QuestionAnswer
Speaker the persona or character that is sending the message to the intended audience (not always the author)
intended audience the intended recipient of the message from the speaker
social-historical context the time period and political environment in which the message was made. This greatly affects the message.
content what is actually the message being conveyed. This includes three appeals: ethics, logic, and pathos
ethics or ethos an appeal to the audience based on the following reasoning: I believe ______ therefore I do ____. It reasons that personal beliefs guide actions.
logos or logic The appeal to the audience based upon reason or truth. EX: All terriers are dogs. All dogs are mammals. Therefore, all terriers are mammals.
pathos or emotions The appeal to the audience based upon "feelings" or emotions. EX: Showing pictures of starving children to make you feel guilty and then donate to their cause.
genre the type of thing that a rhetorical message is. EX: poem, essay, commercial, etc.
subject/topic what the message is about
aim/purpose/theme the intended effect of the rhetoric; the speaker's intended effect on the audience; the moral, lesson, or thesis.
