These are the literary terms for English 12 part A.

| character | a persona that acts or exists within a story |
| static character | one who remains the same throughout a story |
| dynamic character | one who has changed throughout the course of a story |
| protagonist | the main character |
| tragic hero | a character who, through either negative features or decisions, causes their own downfall. This impacts the entire story. |
| direct characterization | what a character says and does |
| indirect characterization | what other characters say about that character (less credible than direct characterization) |
| setting | time and place where a story takes place |
| conflict | the central problem of a story; the main problem that must either be faced or solved; trouble on the horizon. |
| rising action | the conflict and events become more complicated |
| climax | the central conflict is taken head on: this can be a success or a failure. |
| falling action | after the climax, this is the unraveling of the central conflict and how it affects all of the characters. |
| resolution | the state of the world at the end of a story. |
| theme | the underlying moral, lesson, or statement about the human condition. |
