Review of literary terms for the 10th grade English final exam

TermDefinition
Hyperbole a purposely exaggerated statement
Metaphor the comparison of two things NOT using "like" or "as"
Simile a comparison or two things using the words "like" or "as"
Personification giving human traits and characteristics to non-human things
Onomatopoeia words that actually make the sound they represent
Alliteration repeated consonant sounds
Rhyme the repetition of sounds in two or more words
Line a single line of words in a poem
Stanza a division of a poem, made up of two or more line, characterized by a common pattern of meter, rhyme, and number of lines
Rhyme Scheme the pattern of rhymes in a poem or stanza
Meter and Rhythm the beat or pattern in a poem
Couplet two successive lines, usually rhyming and having the same meter, and forming a complete thought
Novel fictional narrative; longer than a short story
Memoir an autobiography or written account of one's experiences of certain events or people
Satire poke fun at people, social organizations, or conventions in order to induce change
Tragedy a play dealing with tragic events and having an unhappy ending, especially one concerning the downfall of the main character
Short Story a story with a fully developed theme but significantly shorter and less elaborate than a novel
Poem a piece of writing, almost always rhythmical, usually metaphorical, and exhibiting elements like meter, rhyme, and stanzas
Essay a short piece of writing on a particular subject
Prose written or spoken language in ordinary form, without metrical structure
Allegory an extended metaphor in which objects, people, and actions are symbolic
Exposition the part of the story where the background to the main conflict is introduced
Rising Action events in the story leading up to the climax
Climax the high point in the story
Falling Action the events in the story leading to the final solution of the conflict
Resolution usually near the end of the story, how the conflict is solved
Foreshadow a hint/clue about something that will happen in the future
Flashback the author interrupts the story to look back at an event that happened earlier
Conflict the main problem between two opposing characters or forces
Suspense creates a feeling of anticipation and expectation in the reader
Irony contrast between something expected or stated and what is true
Imagery visually descriptive language
Symbol a person, place, or event that represents something bigger than itself
Mood the feeling that is evoked in the reader
Tone the attitude of a writer toward his or her subject, characters, and readers
Atmosphere the mood or emotion conveyed by the setting
Diction choice and use of words in writing
Protagonist the main character or "good guy"
Antagonist the "bad guy", the force or character opposing the main character
Foil character who contrasts another by being his/her opposite
Dynamic character a character that is well developed and experiences change throughout the work
Static character a minor character who does not undergo inner change
Theme the overall message the author is trying to get across to the reader
