what is the halo effect? assuming that because you think someone is beautiful or attractive, that everything else about them is perfect
What is the Matching Hypothesis? "you look good together!' "you're a cute couple!" ... you are very likely to end up with someone that is similar in their attractiveness to you
what makes you fall in love (3)? strong emotional arousal, appropriate person (according to your culture's standards), and the belief in the concept of romantic love
what is the "misattribution of love"? the Bridge Study done by Dutton and Aaron
What did the bridge study show? That when someone is excited or physically aroused by something in the environment (the shakey bridge), they are more likely to find someone attractive
who came up with the love triangle? Sternberg
what does sternberg define as the 3 types of love? intimacy, passion, and commitment
what is commitment by itself? empty love (cousin that annoys you)
what is passion by itself? infatuation (crush)
what is intimacy by itself? simply liking that person (aquaintence)
what is intimacy + passion? a romantic relationship
what is intimacy + commitment? companionate (family, best friend)
what is passion + commitment? fatuous (booty call, ex)
All parts of the triangle is a? consummate relationship (complete) this is your life partner
What is the theory of Sociobiology? suggests that our best survival strategy men and women look for very different things.
instead of 'opposites attract' studies show... we value similarity
what is the exposure effect? repeated contact or exposure to someone increased familiarity with the person and increased positive feelins and evaluations of the person.
what else has research suggested about proximity? even unconscious exposure can lead to liking!
What is the two-factor theory of emotion? proposes that all emotions involve physiological arousal and a cognitive interpretation of that arousal. (those sweaty palms and racing heart came from walking up the stairs, not the beautiful lady)
what is excitation transfer? our excitation fromm the actual source of arousal transfers to another source
the halo effect causes us to have this what-is-beautiful-is-good stereotype
