Physical Scienc ch12

heat, light, sound, electricity and magnetism

QuestionAnswer
circuit This is formed when an electric current passes through an unbroken path of conductors.
convection This is the flow of thermal energy through a liguid or gas caused by hot parts rising and cool parts sinking.
frequency high notes have a greater amount of frequency (the number of times an object vibrates per second)than low notes
image this is what we see when light reflects off a shiney surface
magnetic field the directions of the magnetic forces around a magnet
medium the substance through which sound waves travel
photon a particle of light
prism light can be seperated by using a cut piece of clear glass or plastic
sound waves a series of rarefractions and compressions traveling through air.
temperature the measurement of the average energy of molecules in an object
ohms unit of measurement used to measure resistance
What is a type of electric circuit that produces a magnetic field? electromagnetic
What does transparent and translucent mean? transparent -- allows almost all light through translucent-- objects that blur light as they pass through (test by holding up to a light)
What is the difference between convection and conduction? conduction -- heat passes through while the material stays in place convection -- the heat spreads as hot and cold parts move around.
What material would sound travel the fastest? water wood air clothes steel
What is the difference between heat and temperature? heat -- the thermal energy an object releases temperature -- is the measurement of the average energy of molecules.
What is heat capacity? explain in terms of summer beaches...

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
