The Atom

Mrs. Mabry's 8th Grade Science on the Atom

WordDefinition
ATOM the smallest particle an element can be divided into
PROTON the positive charged subatomic particle of the atom
NEUTRON the neutral subatomic particle of the atom
ELECTRON the negative charged particle of the atom
NUCLEUS the dense positive center of the atom that contains protons and neutrons
MASS VS. VOLUME Mass is the amount of matter and Volume is the amount of space something takes up.
STRONG FORCE opposes electromagnetic force, glues the neutrons together
WEAK FORCE raidoactive decay, neutrons break into protons and electrons
ELECTROMAGNETIC FORCE force of attraction and repulsion, positive attracts to a negative
GRAVITATIONAL FORCE attraction between the mass of objects, weakest of all forces
