concrete poem | a poem in which the arrangement of the words on the page reflect the poem’s subject |

limerick | a short, humorous (or funny) poem, usually composed of five lines with a rhyme scheme of AABBA |
imagery | words that appeal to the reader’s five senses to create mental pictures |
Haiku | a traditional form of Japanese poetry with a pattern of 3 lines with a 5/7/5 syllable count |
form | the shape the words and lines of a poem make on the page |
Lyric poetry | a poem that tells a story and is meant to be sung or recited |
couplet | a rhymed pair of lines in a poem |
free verse | a poem without rhyme or rhythm |
alliteration | repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words |
ballad | poetry that represents the thoughts and feelings of a single speaker |
meter | a regular pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a poem |
Onomatopoeia | the use of words whose sound suggests their meaning |

rhyme | repetition of similar sounds at the END of WORDS |
end rhyme | rhyme that occurs at the END of LINES |
rhyme scheme | the pattern of end rhyme in a poem |
simile | a comparison , using like or as, of two things that have some quality in common |
speaker | the voice that is speaking, or talking, in the poem |
symbol | a person, place or object that stands for something other than itself in the poem |
personification | the giving of human qualities to an animal, object, or idea |
repetition | the use of a sound, word, or phrase more than once in a poem |
internal rhyme | rhyme that occurs within the line of poetry |
rhythm | the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables within a line of poetry |
structure | the way in which the poem is organized |
mood | a feeling that a literary work conveys to the reader |
metaphor | a comparison between two things that doesn’t use like or as |
hyperbole | extreme exaggeration |
tone | the author’s attitude towards his or her subject |
acrostic | A poem in which the first or last letters of each line vertically form a word, phrase, or sentence |
