Defining Matter

QuestionAnswer
Atom the smallest particle of an element that can exist alone or in combination with other atoms.
Compounds substances made of two or more elements that cannot be separated by physical means.
Elements substances that contain only one kind of matter.
Heterogeneous mixture a mixture in which every sample of it might have a different composition.
Homogeneous mixture a mixture in which every sample of it has the same composition.
Law of conservation of mass states that the total mass of products of a reaction is equal to the total mass of reactants.
Matter anything that has mass and takes up space
Mixture substance that contains more than one kind of matter.
Molecule the smallest particle of a compound that retains the properties of the compound.
Substance a mixture that cannot be separated into different kinds of matter using physical means.
