| Question | Definition |

| Imply | To suggest without directly stating it. |
| Affect | The way something creates a response in the reader. |
| Compare | To examine the similarities and differences. |
| Contrast | To examine the differences. |
| Referring to/Refer | Directing attention to something already mentioned. |
| Elaborate | To add information to improve understanding. |
| Effect | The result. |
| Infer or Conclude | To use the selection and what you know about the world to "Read between the lines." |
| Justify | To defend or prove a response. |
| Predict | To estimate (guess) future events based upon present and past information. |
| Indicates | Point outs or shows. |
| Summarize | To restate the main points in a brief manner. |
| Details | The specific parts of a whole. |
| Evidence | Something that serves to illustrate or prove. |
| Consequence | A result (usually negative). |
| Fact | A statement that can be proven. |
| Suggest | Put forth as a possibility. |
| Significance | Importance. |
| Excerpt | Part of a written work. |
| Position | A person's point of view or attitude toward a topic. |
| Correlation | Something that shows a relationship between two things. |
| Critical | Points out the negative, against. |
| Ridicule | To make fun of something. |
| Purpose | Goal, reason that you do something. |
| Persuade | To try to change someone's opinion on an issue. |
| Demonstrates | To show clearly, to prove with evidence. |
| Emphasizes/Highlights | Draws attention to, points out. |
| Achieved/Achieves | To reach, accomplish. |
| Determine | To decide, to conclude. |
| Incident | An individual event, a specific moment. |
| Influence/Influenced | To have an impact or effect on something or someone. |
| Impact | Result or effect on something. |
| Expresses | Shows, illustrates. |
| Additional | Extra. |
| Characterize | To show what someone's personality is like. |
| Suggest | To introduce, to bring to mind, to mention. |
| Convey | To communicate, to show. |
| Context | The surrounding events(usually fiction) or the surrounding sentences and words (usually nonfiction) |
| Sentimental | Emotional attachment, romantic, tear-jerking. |
| Lighthearted | Carefree, not stressed, happy-go-lucky, merry, jolly, not serious. |
| Sarcastic | Mocking, scornful, says the opposite of what is meant, witty. |
| Optimistic | Anticipating only the best to happen, hopeful, positive, cheerful outlook. |
| Regret/Remorseful | To be sorry for. |
| Mocking | Imitate, mimic, make fun of. |
| Objective | Expressing or dealing with facts or conditions including opinions. |
| Puzzled | Confused, disoriented, baffled. |
| Celebratory | Happy about the outcome. |
| Vague | Not clearly expressed or defined. |
| Nostalgic | Thinking about the past and wishing things were still the way they use to be. |
| Sympathetic | To feel bad for those involved. |
