Visual and Auditory Drugs

QuestionAnswer
phenylephrine (Mydfrin) EYE Older adults are more prone to systemic absorption causing hypotension and tachycardia. Set up safety precautions
pilocarpine (Isopto Carpine) EYE Difficulty seeing at night, avoid driving at night until visual side effects subside. S/E: tachycardia
methazolamide (Neptazane) Inhibits renal blood flow and GFR, so the drug may leas to electrolyte disturbances of hypokalemia and hypernatremia
chloramphenicol (Chloromycetin) EAR Lie down while instilling ear drops, dizziness may occur following instillation which could result in accidental fall
African-Americans and Mydriatics EYE Require higher dosage for adequate pupillary dilation
Bilberry EYE Stabilizes collagen. Used to prevent long-term eye complications with DM
tobramycin (TobraDex) EYE Common S/E: neurotoxicity and nephrotoxicity
salicylates (Aspirin) EAR OTC most likely to cause ototoxicity
acetazolamide (Diamox) EYE Reduces IOP. Increases urinary elimination therefore increased excretion of potassium. Risk for fluid volume deficit. Take early in the day to avoid nocturia
mannitol (Osmitrol) EYE Increases movement of fluid out of the inner eye into the bloodstream
timolol maleate (Timoptic) EYE Decreases production of aqueous humor resulting in decreased IOP
verteporfin (Visudyne) EYE Dye is activated by the sun. Wear protective clothing when exposed to sun, could cause severe blistering
vidarabine (Vira-A) EYE Redness and swelling are signs of hypersensitivity. Discontinue med immediately
trifluridine (Viroptic) EYE Used to treat viral infections like herpes. Administer for an additional 5 to 7 days after healing has occured
Children 2 and under... EAR Pull pinna down and back
Proparacaine Used to prevent pain during eye procedures. Onset of 20 seconds and duration of 15-20 minutes. Admin right before procedure
dipiyfrine (Propine) Press on inner canthus immediately after administration. Reduces risk of systemic absorption
hydroxyamphetamine (Paredrine) S/E: confusion
opthalamic corticosteroids Increased risk of infection. Should not risk abrasion of the optic tissue. Wear contact lenses throughout corticosteroid therapy
cold ear medication Can cause dizziness and nausea
latanoprost (Xalatan) Increases outflow of aqueous humor via the cornea resulting in decreased IOP
scopolamine hydrobromide Dry mouth is indicative of systemic absorption. Withhold med and seek medical attention
carteolo (Ocupress) IOP pressure 10-21 mmHg is normal
prednisone (econopred) Corticosteroids reduce immune response there healing time is slowing reducing the chance of scaring
