Dowd's Simple Machine Vocabulary
| Vocabulary | Definitions |

| work | done when a force moves an object; force times distance |
| input force | force exerted on a machine; the force you put into a machine |
| output force | force exerted by a machine; the force that comes out of the machine |
| simple machine | one of six machines that does work with only one movement |
| compound machine | machine made of two or more simple machines |
| inclined plane | flat, sloped surface; a ramp |
| wedge | an inclined plane that moves; can have one or two sloping sides |
| screw | an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder |
| lever | a rigid rod or plank that rotates around a fixed point called the fulcrum |
| wheel and axle | two circular objects that are attached and rotate together |
| pulley | grooved wheel with a rope or chain wrapped around the groove |
