| hyperbole | an exageration |
| stanza | a distinct section of a poem, like a paragraph or a verse. |
| onomatopoeia | a sound in word form. The word itself actually imitates the sound. |
| end rhyme | when words at the end of lines rhyme with each other |
| metaphor | A type of figurative language in which one object is described to be something else that is not literally true. |
| simile | A type of figurative language in which an object is compared to something else using the word like or as. |
| personification | A type of figurative language that describes inhuman objects as though they have humans actions, traits, or feelings. |
| alliteration | Using the same letter or sound at the beginning of words. |
| internal rhyme | when two or more words within the same line rhyme with each other. |
| theme | the universal message or purpose of a poem or narrative. This is a complete sentence, not a one-word topic. |
| imagery | vivid descriptions that create images in the reader’s mind. These are usually images, but may incorporate the other senses:, sound, smell, taste, or feeling. |
