Define pharmacology | The scientific study of the actions of drugs and their effects on a living organism. Studies the interaction btwn living organisms and molecules. |
Define drug | A chemical agent that affects the fxing of the body that is NOT needed for normal health. |
What 3 names do drugs have? | Chemical (chemical name), generic (shortened version of the chemical name), and trade (the name the drug is sold under). |
Give an example of a chemical, generic, and trade name, respectively. | Chemical: 7-chloro-1,3... . Generic: diazepam. Trade: Valium. |
Define drug action/effect/response. | What the drug does. Usually broken down into the drug's main effect and side effect. |
What is the difference btwn a drug's main effect and side effect? | The main effect is the one you are interested in; it is not "what the drug does". The side effect is the one you are not interested in; when problematic, called adverse effect. |
What are the two major divisions of pharmacology? | Pharmacokinetics (how the body starts to work on the drug) and pharmacodynamics (how the drug changes the fxing of the body). |
What are the three major concepts in pharmacokinetics? | Drug absorption, distribution, and elimination. |
What is drug absorption? | Mvmt of the drug from where you take it (the site of administration) to the bloodstream (circulatory system). |
What is drug distribution? | Mvmt of the drug in the central circulatory system to its target area |
What is drug elimination? | Removal of the drug from the body |
What 2 things will determine how a drug will be absorbed? | 1. state of drug, and 2. route of administration |
What is reqd for drugs to be absorbed? | They must be able to cross the lipid bilayers of all cell membranes (I.e. Be small, lipid soluble, nonpolarized) |
What is the most direct route of administration to get a drug absorbed? | IntraVenous (IV) |
What are the advantages of taking a drug IV? | Most rapid; most accurate blood conc |
