Define pharmacology The scientific study of the actions of drugs and their effects on a living organism. Studies the interaction btwn living organisms and molecules.
Define drug A chemical agent that affects the fxing of the body that is NOT needed for normal health.
What 3 names do drugs have? Chemical (chemical name), generic (shortened version of the chemical name), and trade (the name the drug is sold under).
Give an example of a chemical, generic, and trade name, respectively. Chemical: 7-chloro-1,3... . Generic: diazepam. Trade: Valium.
Define drug action/effect/response. What the drug does. Usually broken down into the drug's main effect and side effect.
What is the difference btwn a drug's main effect and side effect? The main effect is the one you are interested in; it is not "what the drug does". The side effect is the one you are not interested in; when problematic, called adverse effect.
What are the two major divisions of pharmacology? Pharmacokinetics (how the body starts to work on the drug) and pharmacodynamics (how the drug changes the fxing of the body).
What are the three major concepts in pharmacokinetics? Drug absorption, distribution, and elimination.
What is drug absorption? Mvmt of the drug from where you take it (the site of administration) to the bloodstream (circulatory system).
What is drug distribution? Mvmt of the drug in the central circulatory system to its target area
What is drug elimination? Removal of the drug from the body
What 2 things will determine how a drug will be absorbed? 1. state of drug, and 2. route of administration
What is reqd for drugs to be absorbed? They must be able to cross the lipid bilayers of all cell membranes (I.e. Be small, lipid soluble, nonpolarized)
What is the most direct route of administration to get a drug absorbed? IntraVenous (IV)
What are the advantages of taking a drug IV? Most rapid; most accurate blood conc
