Pharm: Kee Ch46: Antihyperlipidemics & Peripheral Vasodilators: Definitions

Antihyperlipidemics Drugs used to lower lipoproteins
Peripheral vasodilators Drugs that dilate vessels that have been narrowed by vasospasm
Hyperlipidemia Excess of 1 or more lipids in the blood
Lipoprotein 4 major categories: HDL, LDL, VLDL, & chylomicrons
High-density lipoprotein HDL Good lipoprotein; smallest, most dense lipoprotein; contains more protein & less fat
Low-density lipoprotein LDL Bad lipoprotein; 50-60% of cholesterol in blood stream
Very low-density lipoprotein VLDL Mostly triglycerides & less cholesterol
Chylomicrons Large particles that transport fatty acids & cholesterol to the liver
Apolipoproteins Within the lipoprotein shell & contain apolipoprotein (apo) A-1, apoB, & apoE
Homocysteine Range: 4-17; an amino acid, a by-product of protein; found in eggs, chicken, beef, & cheddar cheese. High levels linked to CV disease, stroke, & Alzheimers; Promotes blood clotting
High sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) Range: less than 0.175; a protein that is produced in the liver in response to tissue injury & inflammation
