Urinary System
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Kidneys | Filters blood and processes filtrate |
| Renal Artery | Supplies kidneys with blood |
| Renal Vein | Drain kidneys |
| Ureters | Transport urine from kidneys to bladder via peristalsis |
| Urinary Bladder | Reservoiir for urine |
| Urethra | Transports urine from bladder to outside of body |
| Cortex | Outer portion of kidney; protection for PCTs and DCTs |
| Renal Column | Anchors cortex |
| Medulla | Innermost portion of kidney; has nephrons responsible for salt and water balance in blood |
| Renal Pyramids | Cone-shaped tissues of kidney; 8-15 of them |
| Minor Calyces | One for each renal papilla which projects into a funnel-shaped space; collects urine |
| Major Calyces | Two to three; urine is drained into them |
| Renal Pelvis | Collects urine and transports it to ureter |
| Glomerulus | In cortex; a capillary network; filtration occurs here |
| Glomerular Capsule | Produces a filtrate that must be modified |
| Proximal Convoluted Tubule (PCT) | Reabsorbs ions, nutrients, plasma proteins, vitamins, and water |
| Loop of Henle | Reabsorbs water in tubular fluid, Na+, and Cl- |
| Distal COnvoluted Tubule (DCT) | Secretes H+ and K+; reabsorbs water and Na+ in presence of aldosterone and ADH |
| Glomerular Filtration | Some water and dissolved solutes in blood plasma PASSIVELY move out of glomerulus |
| Tubular Reabsorption | ACTIVELY transports filtrate by diffusion back to blood |
| Tubular Secretion | ACTIVELY transports solutes from blood to tubular fluid |
| Urine Formation Processes | Glomerular Filtration, Tubular Reabsorption, Tubular Secretion |
