Restrictive Lung Disease a decrease in total lung capacity as a rsult of fluid accumulation or loss of elasticity of the lung
Bronchodilators (sympathomimetics), leukotriene antagonists, glucocorticoids, cromolyn, anticholinergics, & mucolytics
COPD Caused by airway obstruction w/ increased airway resistance of airflow to lung tissue. Includes chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, emphysema, & asthma
Asthma inflammatory disorder of the airway walls associated w/ a varying amount of airway obstruction
Chronic bronchitis Progressive lung disease caused by smoking or chronic lung infections. Bronchial inflammation & excessive mucous secretion result in airway obstruction
Bronchiectasis abnormal dilation of the bronchi & bronchioles secondary to frequent infection & inflammation
Emphysema Terminal bronchioles plug w/ mucus => loss in fiber & elastin in alveoli => alveoli enlarge => air trapped in alveoli => inadequate gas exchange
Bronchial asthma A COPD characterized by periods of bronchospasm => wheezing & difficulty breathing
Bronchospasm Lung tissue is exposed to extrinsic/intrinsic factors that stimulate bronchoconstrictive response.
Glucocorticoids Members of corticosteroid family, used to treat resp disorders, like asthma
Mucolytics Liquify & loosen thich mucous secretions so they can be expectorated.
