Science - Atmosphere

QuestionAnswer
Mixture of gases that surrounds the Earth and includes liquid & solid particles Atmosphere
What are the three main gases that surround the earth? oxygen 21%,Nitrogen 78%, and helium, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide make up 1%.
This layer bends into outer space. Exosphere
Most meters burn up in this layer Mesosphere
This layer contains the ozone layer that protects us from ultraviolet sun rays Stratosphere
This layer is where most of the weather happens. Air is always moving and it is closest to the Earth's surface. Troposphere
The study of weather is called what? Meterology
What is the transfer of energy through waves? Radiation
Energy and heat from the sun is called what? Solar Radiation
How do some waves reflect or bounce off the Earth? The bounce off of clouds or particles in the atmosphere.
What % of the sun's rays are absorbed into the Earth's surface? 50%
What region of the earth is the coolest because the sun's rays are less concentrated - farther away Polar Regions - North and South Poles
What region of the Earth are the warmest with the rays being so concentrated - closest to Tropical Regions - usually close to the Equator
Where are Temperate Zones found that have varying temperatures & More seasonal change Between the polar regions and the tropical regions
What is the transfer of thermal energy through solids called? Conduction
What is the transfer of thermal energy through liquids and gases called? Convection
The Earth is heated up by all 3 of these... radiation, conduction , and convection
What air can hold more water vapor? Warm air
What is humidity? The amount of water vapor in the air
Fluffy and puffy clouds are called Cumulus
Wispy and feathery clouds are called cirrus
Layer and flat like a blanket clouds are called Stratus
rain clouds are called nimbus
Clouds that are higher than usual are called Alto
Hail forms inside this type of cloud Cumulonimbus
When does dew form? When water vapor condenses onto cooler surfaces.
What is a pattern of weather an area has over a long period Climate
Force that is exerted by air over a given area Air Pressure
What is used to measure atmospheric pressure Barometer
What happens when warm air rises? It causes a low pressure
What happens when cool air sinks? It causes high pressure
What indicates cloudy skies, possible rain or snow Low pressure
What indicates clear skies or dry weather High pressure
What is fallen air spreading across the earth's surface - flowing into low pressure Wind
Small differences between high and low pressure Gentle Winds
Large differences between high and low pressure Strong Winds
