| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What two categories are matter divided in? | pure substances and mixtures |
| Why is the composition of an element fixed? | an element has a fixed composition because it contains only one type of atom. |
| How are elements different from compounds? | Elements are made from only one type of atom while compounds always contain two or more elements |
| Why do properties of a mixture vary? | because the composition of a mixture is not fixed. |
| What is the difference between heterogeneous mixtures and homogeneous mixtures? | In a Homogeneous mixture the substances are evenly distributed and in a Heterogeneous mixture the parts of the substance are noticeably different from another. |
| How can you classify a solution, a suspension, or colloid? | based on the size of the largest particle you can classify a solution, suspension, or colloid. |
| Describe the appearance of a solution. | transparent but can have color. |
| How can you tell the difference between a solution and colloid? | The Tyndall Effect. |
| What are three things that affect solubility? | Temperature, Pressure, and Polarity |
| How can you tell the difference between a suspension and a colloid? | They are both heterogeneous mixtures but suspensions are cloudy and opaque while colloids are transparent. |
| Why is salad dressing a suspension? | because when salad dressing is left standing it separates into layers. |
| What are some terms associated with chemical reactions? | burns, combust, rust, ect. |
| What are words associated with physical properties? | taste, odor, size, solubility, ect. |
| What is "Brownian motion"? | particles of gas in a constant, random motion |
| What is endothermic? | putting energy in to make a phase change |
| What is exothermic? | getting energy/heat out |
| Is deposition going from a solid to a gas or a gas to a solid? | gas to solid |
| What speeds up solubility? | stirring, crushing, and heating |
| What does HOFBrINCl stand for? | all the dimers |
| What is most dense? solids liquids or gases? | solids |
