polydipsia excessive thirst
polyphagia excessive hunger/eating
glucosuria the presence of glucose in blood
hyperglycemia abnormal high sugar in blood
neuropathy disease of the nerves
suspension undissolved substance dispersed within a liquid etc
hypothalamus controls the activity of pituitary glands; produces hormones known as "releasing factor" to anterior or posterior lobe
anterior lobe includes tropic hormones: TSH, ACTH, GH, PRL, FSH, LH
posterior lobe includes oxytocin & ADH
endocrine glands ductless & empty their hormones directly into the blood system----> target organ
pituitary gland "master gland" controls many of the other glandsl; loacted in the brain below hypothalamus; has anterior & posterior lobes
negative feedback mechanism that controls the release of the hormones; sends hypothalamus msg when job is done
somatotropin growth hormone
glucocorticoids / corticosteroids treats inflammation & allergic conditions; regulates metabolism of carbs & proteins esp. during stress
mineralcorticoids regulates fluid balance of body or potassium & sodium; essential for life!
aldosterone most imp. mineralcorticoids; increases reabsorption water with sodium
estradiol gets breasts & uterus ready; most abundant & most active of the estrogens
estrogenic hormones estriol, estrone, estradiol
progesterone imp for maintaining teh uterine lining of
menopause between the age of 42-54 ovaries stop producing estrogen & progesterone& monthly menstruation stops
