Chemical Bonding Key
The key terms of chemical bonding
| Word | Defintion |
|---|---|
| Covalent Bond | The electrical attraction that is held together by their mutual atttraction for shared electrons. |
| Covalent Compound | A substance that is made up of atoms which are held together by covalent bonds. |
| Dipole | The seperation of a charge. |
| Electron-Dot Structure | A shorthand notation of the shell model of the atom in which valence electrons are shown around an atomic symbol |
| Electronegatively | How strong an atom is able to tug on bonding electrons. |
| Ion | Any atom that has a net electric charge. |
| Ionic Bond | The electric force of attraction between 2 opposite charged ions. |
| Ionic Compound | The combination of two completely different elements. |
| Molecule | is any group of atoms held together by covalent bonds. |
| Nonbonding Pairs | Electron pairs in an electron-dot structure. |
| Nonpolar Bond | When two atoms have the same electronegatively with no dipole. |
| Polar Bond | When the electronegatively of the atoms differ and a dipole is formed. |
| Valence Shell | Electrons in the outermost shell. |
