Forms of Medication

QuestionAnswer
Instillation Instilling fluid into a body cavity
Topical applied to specific area of the surface of the body
Transdermal disk (Patch) The disk secures the medication ointment to the skin
Intravenous (IV) Injection into the vein
Intramuscular (IM) Injection into a muscle
Oral Medications are given by mouth and swallowed with fluid
Intradermal (ID) Injection into the dermis just under the epidermis
Subcutaneous (Sub-Q) Injection into the tissues just below the dermis on the skin
Sublingual Medication is placed under the tongue to dissolve and are readily absorbed
Buccal Placing the solid medication in the mouth and against the mucous membranes of the cheek until the medicine dissolves
Parenternal Involves injecting a medicine into the body tissues.
Inhalations Medications is administered through the nasal passages , oral passages, or endotracheal tubes.
