What is the Mass Number? The sum of the numbers of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of the atom.
What is it called when nuclei give off nuclear radiation? Radioactivity
Who discovered radioactivity? Henry Becquerel.
Who named the process radioactivity? Marie Curie
What are the three types of radioactive decay? Alpha, Beta, and Gamma.
Which of the types of decay has the greatest penetrating ability? Gamma Decay.
Which of the types of decay has the least penetrating ability? Alpha Decay.
What is an Isotope? An atom that has the same number of protons as other atoms, but has a different number of neutrons.
What is a Half-Life? The amount of time that it takes for half of a radioactive substance to decay.
What is the next Half-Life? One Half. One Fourth. One Eight. ...? One Sixteenth.
How do we use radioactivity to help us? We use 'tracers' to help find out medical problems. Also used to find defects in structures.
What is Nuclear Fission? The process by which a large nucleus splits into two small nuclei and releases energy. (Fission; to divide or split.)
What is Nuclear Fusion? Two or more nuclei that have small masses combine, or fuse, to form a larger nucleus. (Fusion; to join two or more things together to produce a single entity.)
