Vocab Chapter 1+2

Bay Part of a large body of water that exstends into a shoreline generally smaller than a gulf.
Channel Wide straight or waterway between two landmasses that lie closer to eachother deep part of a river or other waterway
Climate Is the usual predicatable pattern of weather in and area over a long period of time
Current Carry warm or cool water through the world's ocean
Drought A long period of extreme dryness
Elevation Heigh land above sea level
El Nino The name "El Nino" was coined by early Spanish explorers in the Pacific
Gulf Part of a large body of water that extends into a shoreline generally smaller and more deeply indented than bay
Harbor A sheltered place along a shoreline where ships can anchor safely
Hurricane Violent tropical storm with high winds and heavy rains
High Lattitude These climates are generally cold but some severely cold than others
Island Land area smaller than a continent completely surrounded by water
Landforms Individual features of the land
La Nina Spanish for "girl" because the effects are the opposite of those in El Nino
Lake A sizable inland body of water
Mountain Land with steep sides that rises sharply (1,000 feet or more) from surrounding land; generally larger and more rugged than a hill
Mountain Range A series of connected mountains
Monsoon Seaseonal wind that blows over a continent for months at a time
Mid-Latitude Climate Temperate climate (think seasons) extend from 231]/2 degress north to 60 degress north and from 23 1/2 degress south to 60 degress south
Ocean One of the four major bodies of salt water that surround the continents
Highland Climate cool or cold climate that varies with elevation (like high up in the mountains)
Tropical Climate Warm years round extends from the equtor to the Tropic of (23 1/2 degrees south)
Prevailing Wind Movements of air that travel around the earth in a typical pattern
Dry Climate Dry to partially dry areas with little to no rain; temperatures can range from very cold to very hot
Typhoon Name of a turricane in Asia
Tornado Funnel-shaped windstorm; sometimes forms during a thunderstorm
Tropics Low lattitude region between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic and the Tropic of Capricorn
Mountain Land with steep sides that rise sharply (1,000 ft or more) from surrounding land
Mountain Range A series of connected mountains

Weather Unpredictable changes in the air that take place in a short period of time

Physical Feature Characteristics pf a place-naturally occurring like landforms, climate, recources
River Large natural stream of water that runs through land
Sea Large body of water partially or completely surrounded by land
Strait Narrow stretch of water joining two larger bodies of water
Valcano Mountain created as liquid rock and ash erupt from inside the earth
Valley Are of lowland between hills and mountains
