Vocab Definition

What is a Bay? A bay is part of a large body of water that extends into a shoreline, generally smaller than a gulf.
What is a channel? A channel is wide strait or waterway between two landmasses that lie closs to each other; deep part of a river or other waterway.
What is climate? Climate is Usual,predictable pattern of weather in an area over a long period of time.
What is a current? A current is moving streams of water in the world's oceans, which affect the climate of land areas.
What is a drought? A drought is a long period of extreme dryness and water shortages.
What is elevation? Elevation is hieght above sea level.
What is El Niño? El niño is a combination of temperature, wind, and water effects in the Paccific Ocean that causes heavy rains in some areas and drought in others.
What is a gulf? A gulf is a part of water that extends into a shoreline, larger and more deeply intended than a bay.
What is a harbor? A harbor is a sheltered place along a shoreline where ships can anchor safely.
What is a hurricane? A hurricanne is a violent tropical storm with high winds and heavy rains.
What is high-latitude climate? High-latitude climates are regions that lie mostly in the high latitudes of each hemisphere, from 60 degrees N to the North Pole and 60 degrees S to the South Pole.
What is an island? An island is a body of land smaller than a continent and surrounded by water.
What is a landform? A landform is individual features of the land.
What is La Niña? La niña is a pattern of unusual weather in the Pacific Ocean that has opposite effects of El Niño.
What is a lake? A lake is a sizable inland body of water.
What is a Mountain? A mountain is land with steep sides that rises sharply (1,000 feet or more)from surrounding land;generally larger and more rugged than a hill.
What is highland climate? Highland climate is cool or cold climate that varies with elevation (like high up in the mountains).
What is tropical climate? Tropical climate is warm year round extends from the equator to the Tropic of Cancer (23 1/2 degrees north) and from the equator to the Tropic of Capricorn (23 1/2 degrees south).
What is mid-latitude climate? Mid-climate is temperature climate (think seasons) extend from 23 1/2 degrees notrh to 60 degrees north and from 23 1/2 south to 60 degrees south.
What is prevailing wind? Prevailing wind are movements of air that travel around the earth in typical pattern.
What is mountain range? A mountain range is a series of connected mountains.
What is a monsoon? A monsoon is seasonal wind that blows over a continent for months at a time.
What is an ocean? An ocean is one of the four major bodies of salt water that surround the continents.
What is a platau? A plateau is an area of flat or rolling land at a high elevation, about 300- 3,000 feet high.
what is a peninsula? A peninsula is a body of land jutting into a lake or ocean, surrounded on three sides of water.
What is a plain? A plain is an area of level land, usually at low elevation and often covered with grasses.
What is a physical feature? A physical feature is a characteristic of a place occuring naturally, such as landform , body of water, climate pattern, or resource.
What is a river? A river is a large natural stream of water that runs through land.
What is a sea? A sea is a large body of water patially or completely surrounded by land.
What is a strait? A strait is a narrow stretch of water joining two larger bodies of water.
What is a volcano? A volcano is a mountain created as liquid rock and ash erupt from inside the earth.
What is a valley? A valley is an area of lowland between hills and mountains.
What is dry climate? Dry climate is dry areas with little to no rain; temperature can range from very cold to very hot.
What is a typhoon? A typhoon is a name for a hurricane in Asia.
What are tropics? Tropics are low latitude regions between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capircorn.
What is a tornado? A tornado is a funnel-shapped windstorm;sometimes forms during thunderstorm.
