Chapter 7
Motion Voc
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| motion | a change in position |
| elapsed time | length of time that passes from one event to another |
| distance | length of a path between two points |
| speed | the rate at which the position of an object changes |
| constant speed | speed that does not change |
| velocity | the speed and direction in which an object is moving |
| acceleration | a rate of change in velocity |
| deceleration | the rate of slowdown |
| force | a push or pull |
| friction | a force that opposes motion and that occurs when things slide or roll over each other |
| inertia | the tendency of an object to resist changes in its motion |
| gravity | the force of attraction between any two objects that have mass |
| Law of universal gravitation | gravitational force depends on the mass of the two objects involved and on the distance between them |
| First law of motion | An object at rest will remain at rest unless a force acts on it. |
| Second law of motion | A force acting on an object casues the object to accelerate in the direction of the force. |
| Third law of motion | If an object exerts a force on a second object, the second object will always exert force on the first object that is equal in size and opposite in direction. |
