Musical Terms

QuestionAnswer
Melody Succession of notes, tones, and pitches perceived by the mind.
Cadence Resting place in a musical phrase.
Contour The overall shape of a musical line.
Countermelody An accompanying melody sounded against the principle melody.
Range Distance between the lowest and highest tones of a melody.
Conjuct Smooth connected melody that moves principally by small intervals.
Disjunct Disjoined or disconnected melody with many leaps.
Phrases Musical units often a component of a melody.
Rhythm The controlled movement of music in time.
Meter Organization of rhythm in time; The grouping of beats into larger, regular patterns, noted as measures.
